This was the last game in the League Cup section with GV hoping to take all available points and make it through to the Qrts.
The game started at a very high pace with both GV and Westerlands moving the ball about quickly on the large and excellent pitch. Conditions suited both teams who looked like they wanted to play a good passing game.
It was Westerlands who started best making good use of the pitch to pass the ball and keep it. It was a hot night and there was a lot of early hard work from GV to shut down Westerlands and to force them into errors.
Early on Westerlands had most of the possession and gradually GV got to grips with the game and started to create a few chances. An early injury (head knock) to the Westerlands Left back forced a substitution. GV then started to exploit the Left back area. It wasn't long after this that GV got their 1st of the night. Some accurate long passes and a well placed crossed by Frankie to Sharpie saw him break through the defence and header home a goal.
Another injury in the 1st half, this time for GV led to Kenco being replaced by Graeme. GV managed to keep themselves headed through to half time in what was a closely fought 1st half.
In the 2nd half GV came out early at a fast pace with some excellent passing to create what was the best goal of the night. Several accurate passes tore through the Westerlands team to leave JP outside the 18-yard area with a shooting opportunity. Some composure on the ball had JP place an accurate chip over the goalkeeper.
With GV now having a commanding spell in the game Graeme went on to take the 3rd of the night. At this stage it looked like Westerlands could easily have thrown in the towel and the evenings game would be over. However, Westerlands worked hard to get themselves back into the game. A couple of substitutions for Westerlands and they lifted themselves to launch several attacks on the GV defence. It wasn't long before the pressure paid off and Westerlands got a deserved goal. As Westerlands now pressed for more goals it became an open fast flowing game with many opportunities for both teams, the best being for Westerlands. Some excellent goal keeping at this stage from Jamie kept GV ahead.
There was a late substitution with Sharpie off for Gavin. His fresh legs troubled the Westerlands defence. Late on Westerlands got their 2nd and final goal of the night through a penalty award.
It was yet another good all round performance for GV in an excellent evenings game of football from both teams.
